Northfield Mountain, Nest Boxes and Bluebirds

March 14 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm EDT

Eastern bluebirds, Tree swallows, and other beloved local species like Black-capped chickadees, Nuthatches, and House wrens all nest in tree cavities. However, if tree cavities are scarce, nestboxes will be used. Since 1981, Northfield Mountain Recreation and Environmental Center staff and volunteers have built and monitored cavity-nesting bird boxes in the fields around the Mountain. Learn the lifestyles of these gorgeous birds and the stories of how human interventions have had both positive and negative impacts on Massachusetts bird populations.

Would you like to join the team that makes weekly visits to the boxes to determine which nests, eggs, and young are successfully fledging from the boxes? Would you rather post bird boxes on your own property? Or perhaps you’re just aching to see and hear some harbingers of spring? If so, Join FirstLight staffer Beth Bazler on Thursday, March 14th at 6:00 p.m. for stories of local birds and how community members are helping them thrive.

This free program meets at the Northfield Visitor Center at 99 Millers Falls Road, Northfield, MA. No registration is needed. Appropriate for Adults and children ages 10 and older.
