In-person events will kick off on Small Business Saturday, November 27 with the Mayor’s Tree Lighting on Park Square. Festivities will begin with Cocoa and Carols at 6pm, featuring the Westfield High School Brass Ensemble, led by Patrick Kennedy and the Westfield High School Show Choir, conducted by Korey Bruno. Cocoa will be provided, while three giant puppets by award-winning puppeteer Anne Cubberly will entertain attendees.
Mayor Don Humason will light the city’s Holiday Tree at 6:30 pm and introduce the very special arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus, who will then meet children and their families.
To honor Small Business Saturday on November 27 WOW will also mount a Pop-Up Holiday Marketplace in the Park Square Pavilion featuring area vendors from 10am to 6pm with another market at WOW’s Creative Arts Center at 105 Elm Street that will be open from 10am to 4 pm.
The Holiday Marketplace at the Creative Arts Center will continue on Saturdays and Sundays through December 19 from noon to 4 pm with a variety of rotating vendors offering wares and crafts for gift-giving.
The fourth annual Tree Jubilee will be Nov. 26- Dec. 8 and is a special fundraiser that supports WOW’s community programming and administrative fees. For the second year, it will take place virtually online, as well as at Roots Athletic Center at 181 Root Road, where visitors may view a wonderland of trees and wreaths, donated by area individuals, businesses and organizations.
As in past years, some of the trees and wreaths are designed by their crafters to reflect the work of their businesses or organizations with some, offering additional prizes and certificates within their branches. Raffle tickets will give participants the opportunity to take their favorite tree or wreath home, when the winners are drawn at the end of Tree Jubilee on December 8. Tickets may only be purchased and submitted online through WOW’s website at westfieldonweekends.com.
The third free concert produced with the Music Department of Westfield State as part of WOW’s Up Close and Musical series will take place at the Center on Friday, December 3 at 7 pm. It will feature faculty and students of the Music Department presenting a holiday program entitled “From Beethoven to Broadway.”
Wow’s Creative Arts Center will also offer a series of “December De-Stress” workshops that have been designed to help reduce the stress that the holidays bring. These include sugar cookie decorating (Dec. 1) scratchboard art (Dec. 4) wreath-making (Dec. 8) photo/art framing (Dec. 14), as well as “Meditation and Creation” (Dec. 9) and “Quieting Your Mind with Line Design” (Dec. WOW’s first Happy Noon Year! will be held at the Center on New Year’s Eve Day, December 31 at 11:30 and 1 pm. Designed for children, it will be an interactive party with the Snow Queen, exploring holiday celebrations throughout the world. Special treats, songs, crafts and games and a countdown to “noon year” make this event particularly unique. Tickets are $5 for children and $15 for adults. The second Holiday Lights Tour will offer families the opportunity to take a self-guided drive-by tour of the city’s outdoor holiday displays.
