The Zoo in Forest Park, World Turtle Day
May 20, 2021 - May 22, 2021
World Turtle Day is May 23 and we’re shellebrating! In honor of World Turtle Day on May 23, we’re giving away two turtle-themed prize packs to the two people who most closely guess the weight of Goliath, our largest tortoise, and Salvador, our smallest turtle.
Think you know how much each one weighs? Click here to submit your guesses. The cost is $2/guess and all money raised goes directly to the care of these two Testudines and their friends. Winners will be announced May 23!
The closest guess to each turtle’s actual weight wins. If multiple people submit the same closest guess, a random winner will be chosen from the finalists. One winner for each turtle will be chosen. The contest ends Saturday, May 22 at 11:59 p.m.
Be sure to tune into our Facebook page between now and World Turtle Day to learn all about turtles and tortoises, what to do and what not to do when you encounter them in your backyard and to learn about the personal stories of the turtles who live at The Zoo.
Did you know…
Some turtles never leave home?
Some turtles, such as box turtles, will stay within a 250-yard radius of where they were born. This is why it’s important not to move turtles. If assisting a turtle across a busy street, always move it in the direction it’s headed.
A turtle can feel its shell?
A turtle’s shell is an extension of its ribcage and is comprised of many nerve endings and blood vessels. Because of this, a turtle is able to feel all contact with its shell.
