Friend or Foe? National Model Aircraft Project of World War II

  • $20.00

Adult Aerospace Academy

In the wake of Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Navy and the Bureau of Aeronautics looked to the Nation’s school aged youth to build 500,000 model airplanes. Perceived as vital training aids, these wood models were used to teach pilots, aerial gunners, and ground observers to rapidly identify friend from foe. Boys and girls across the nation answered the call and changed the hobby of modeling forever.

NEAM Curator Mike Thornton explores the legacy of this forgotten chapter of World War II and his research into the experiences of students and their schools in the National Model Aircraft Project.

Program includes free admission to the museum.
