The Mill District General Store, Talk
July 27 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm EDT
Join Dr. Shirley Jackson Whitaker at the Mill District Local Art Gallery on Thursday, July 27, from 6-7pm for a presentation about her Book of Etchings that is part of her Ashes to Ashes: Homegoing for the Unburied Series. This project was created “to acknowledge and mourn the African Americans who were racially terrorized during the Jim Crow era after the Civil War and until this very day. Some endured lynching and other forms of brutalization and, therefore, they never received a proper burial.”
Dr. Whitaker demonstrates the physical process of creating the Book of Etchings and discusses the steps that were taken to get it accepted into the Rare Book Collection of the Library of Congress. Dr. Whitaker will have sample of materials to show each stage in the process of etching: from coating the copper plate, carving through it, and then the process of printing the plate.
Ages 16+
Free, preregistration required.
Donations encouraged.
All proceeds benefit the Shirley Jackson Whitaker Foundation.
