Northfield Mountain, Hike
July 4, 2022 - July 10, 2022
Fullers Pasture Loop. An easy 1.4 miles hike with 80’ elevation gain.
Meander through open fields and woodlands dotted with vernal pools and enjoy views west of a historic farmstead.
From the parking lot head uphill on the grassy path on the right side of the paved road. At the security gate for Northfield Mountain’s Pumped-Hydro Storage Station turn left and continue along the path that bears right through Fullers Field.
Keep an eye out for bluebirds perched or feeding near nesting boxes in open fields. Enjoy views of the historic Morgan farmstead, dating from the early 1800s, just past the faded yellow gate. Stay left along Rattlebone and take a right onto Angel’s Roost, where wooded trails are shaded by towering white pines and an understory of maple, oak, birch, and beech.
Listen for singing frogs in early spring – the quack of the wood frog and peep of the tiny spring peepers. Turn right at Ridgerunner. Continue straight at the 5-way grassy intersection retracing your steps back to Fullers Field.
Instead of following the path left in the field, head straight down the steep and grassy hill to enjoy seasonal wildflowers on your way back to the parking lot.
