Chicopee, Independence Day

The City of Chicopee Patriotic Parade prefaces the Fourth of July Fireworks that the city holds annually at Szot Park.

The city will hold its first Patriotic Parade and resource fair this year as a way to kick off the annual fireworks celebration.

Marchers will step off at 3 p.m. Saturday from American Legion Post 452 on Exchange Street and follow the traditional Memorial Day parade route up Center Street and Front Street, ending at Szot Park, where the fireworks will be held.

Fireworks 9:30 p.m. Szot Park, Front Street. As it tradition, the fireworks will be shot off from the back of Bemis Pond and are best viewed from the upper fields or inside the stadium of Szot Park, which will be open for the event.

The day commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the 13 former British colonies on July 4, 1776.

Massachusetts became the first state to recognize the Fourth of July as a statewide holiday in 1781.
