SUMMARY:Polish Center of Discovery and Learning\, Polish Heritage Month
DESCRIPTION:When people think of Polish America\, they think of Chicago\, Buffalo\, and Detroit. Almost nobody thinks of Chicopee\, Massachusetts — and yet this city on the Connecticut River built one of the most remarkable Polish-American communities in all of New England. \nThe first Polish settlers arrived in Chicopee in 1880\, drawn by work in the city’s large textile mills. By 1885 the census counted just 205 Polish residents. By 1914\, there were over 9\,000 — a community that in less than thirty years had created more Polish-owned businesses than any other Polish community in all of New England. They built St. Stanislaus Parish\, which grew to 800 parishioners of Polish descent within just four years of its founding — the largest Polish parish in New England at its peak. \nThey built the Polish National Home on Cabot Street in 1914\, a five-story building that cost $55\,000 — an enormous sum at the time — featuring social meeting spaces\, a library\, English language and citizenship classes\, transient housing for new arrivals\, and later a bowling alley and billiards hall. The building is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1921\, the community founded the Polish National Credit Union — still serving members in western Massachusetts more than a hundred years later. \nToday\, a man named Stas Radosz keeps the community’s memory alive at the Polish Center for Discovery and Learning in Chicopee — collecting the trunks\, documents\, boat tickets\, wooden shoes\, and personal objects of what he calls the Polish plain people who came and contributed to the success of this country. Among his most haunting pieces: the P badge and special passport of a thirteen-year-old Chicopee-born Polish boy who was selected by the Nazis for forced labor\, wore his P badge on his clothing for years\, survived the war\, came home to Chicopee\, and is buried in St. Stan’s Cemetery with his best friend — his dog. That is the Polish community of Chicopee. \n \n\n\nSchedule a Tour\n\n\nWhether you’re bringing a school group\, a community organization\, or just want a guided experience\, we’d love to show you around. Tours are available Monday through Friday and can be booked online in just a few minutes. \nMembers are always free. Adults: $10\, Seniors\, Military\, and Students: $8\, Ages 12-17: $5\, Under 12: Free\, EBT/WIC cardholders: Free. \nAll donations and memberships go directly to managing our museum space and expanding our programming. \n\n\nOctober is Polish Heritage Month as it is the month when the first Polish settlers arrived at Jamestown\, VA in 1608 as well as to commemorate the deaths of General Kazimierz Pułaski and Tadeusz Kościuszko (military leaders who fought in the American Revolution). Whether you’re Polish American or not\, it’s important to mark the culture of a people who helped shape this country.\nThe Polish Center of Discovery and Learning is a living monument that celebrates the many contributions\, both past and present\, made to the economy\, arts\, and sciences of our nation by Polish people and their descendants. The mission of the Center at Elms College is to preserve objects representative of the material culture of the Polish people in America; to provide guidance and support materials to schools and other institutions wishing to introduce Polish topics to their students; and to offer a variety of workshops\, exhibits\, concerts\, conferences\, seminars\, films\, plays\, lectures and other events that focus on the history and cultural traditions of the Polish people in Europe and the United States. \n  \n

SUMMARY:MassWildlife\, Fall
DESCRIPTION:5 Ways to get outside this fall \nReady for some fall fun? Whether it’s hawk watching\, fishing in one of the Commonwealth’s many beautiful waterbodies\, or chasing vibrant foliage\, these five outdoor activities will help you embrace the season. View our top recommendations and head outdoors. \nVenturing out for a fall walk\, or hike?  Learn more about the animals out there with you. \nSpider appreciation \nDon’t let their 8 legs scare you—most spiders are harmless and incredibly helpful! So instead of running the other way\, take a closer look at 3 common spiders you may encounter this fall. Learn how spiders help keep your home and garden pest-free. \nSnakes are preparing for winter \nWhen the weather gets colder\, snakes and other cold-blooded animals slow down. Snakes take shelter in rock crevices\, hollow logs\, and holes but occasionally venture out on warmer days to bask in the sun. Get to know the 14 native snakes in Massachusetts. \n \nMeet the muskrat \nMuskrats are easily the most common semi-aquatic mammal in North America\, yet most people don’t know much about them.\nMuskrats are found in most lakes\, ponds\, and wetlands in Massachusetts. They have amazing features that allow them to spend much of their lives in the water. Their rudder-like tail is unique among all other mammals and make muskrats easy to identify. Read more. \nIf you’d like to try to observe a muskrat\, grab a pair of binoculars and head to a nearby wetland area. Look along dirt banks or on raised mounds of mud and vegetation. Muskrats are most active around dawn and dusk but are known to enjoy feeding in sun on calm fall and winter afternoons. Don’t forget to check muddy or snowy areas for muskrat tracks. Click here to see the tracks of muskrats and other common Massachusetts animals. \n \nDeer Rut \nWhat is the rut and when is it?\n\n\nRut is a term used to describe the behavior of deer during the breeding season when males pursue females that are in estrous and ready to breed. The rut can range from several months in southern states like Florida to a short window of time in the fall in the Northeast. This an important time for many hunters because bucks become more active during daylight hours while pursuing does and are less cautious than usual. This behavior can increase the odds of a hunter harvesting a buck\, or even a doe that has been moved from her bedding spot by a buck. \nPre-rut begins in late September and continues into October. During this time\, maternal groups of deer consisting of does with offspring concentrate on feeding to increase their fat supplies for the winter and the demands of future pregnancy. Bucks are also focused on building fat supplies to prepare for the physical exertion of the rut\, but they are also limiting their daytime movement during this time. \nPost-Rut\nAs the rut begins to taper off\, both males and females start to focus more on food. It’s especially important for bucks to regain their weight after their exertion during the rut. Bucks start to decrease their daytime activity once more. During this time\, males are still interested in breeding if the opportunity presents itself. \n\nRubs: Bucks start to build their neck muscles for fighting and start to scent-mark their territories. Bucks rub their antlers on trees to build their neck muscles and to leave their scent.\nScrapes: During pre-rut\, bucks use their hooves to scrape away leaves and expose a patch of fresh soil. Bucks then mark the area with their scent glands and with urine. Bucks almost always position their scrapes under overhanging tree branches. The males scent-mark the branch by licking the it and rubbing their orbital gland (near their eyes) on it. Often\, twigs are broken off this “licking branch” by the buck’s antlers during the scent-marking process. Scrapes are a key form of scent communication for deer. Other does and bucks may be attracted to these areas and will urinate on the scrape to leave their own scent. From these scents\, a buck can determine the sex and reproductive status of other animals in the area.\n\n \nAttention Deer Hunters: Rut activity peaks between Nov. 6–20 in Massachusetts. Get tips for hunting the rut. \nWho we are \nThe Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (MassWildlife) is the state agency responsible for the conservation of all freshwater fish and wildlife in the Commonwealth\, including endangered species. SUMMARY:MassWildlife\, Bat Week
DESCRIPTION:This October\, forget about the haunted house—build a bat house instead! \n \nBat Week is an annual\, international celebration of the role of bats in nature\n‘Tis the season for celebrating the flittermouse\, flying fox\, or most commonly known as bats! Bat week starts October 24\, where bat lovers raise awareness about the need for bat conservation and to celebrate their roles in nature. Did you know that 8 of our 9 native bat species are listed under the Massachusetts Endangered Species Act? Get ready for Bat Week by learning about these often-misunderstood creatures. \nDespite the threats\, there are ways to help bats. Get ready to celebrate Bat Week at the end of the month by learning about what you can do to protect the bats in your backyard! \n \nHow you can help bats\nOne of the best ways you can support bat conservation is to put up an artificial roost\, like a bat house. Bat houses give females a safe\, warm place to raise their young. Since most female bats only have one pup each year\, bat populations grow very slowly. Habitat loss and degradation is making it more difficult for bats to locate natural roost sites. Installing a bat house on your property can provide a safe environment for bats\, while ridding your yard of pest insects\, like mosquitoes\, moths\, and beetles. Bat houses can be purchased or you can build your own. MassWildlife offers instructions for building and installing a bar house. \nOther ways to help: \n\nEducate yourself and others to help dispel myths and fears about bats. Read the Massachusetts Wildlife magazine article Bat Myths Debunked\, to learn more about the fascinating and beneficial features of bats.\nBe a citizen scientist. If there is a colony of 10 or more bats on your property\, please report it here. Colonies may be found in trees\, buildings\, attics\, barns\, sheds\, or other outbuildings. This information will be used to help conserve the state’s endangered population of little brown bats.\nProtect habitat for bats. If you have old\, dead\, or dying trees on your property\, leave them standing as potential roost sites for bats.\nIf you must exclude or evict bats from your home\, ensure the process is safe and humane by following MassWildlife’s recommendations found in the Massachusetts Homeowner’s Guide to Bats.\nReduce pesticide use to ensure there are plenty of insects for bats to feed on.\nCreate a bat-friendly landscape in your backyard by adding water features\, such as a pond\, and night-scented flowers.\n\nMassWildlife is responsible for the conservation of freshwater fish and wildlife in the Commonwealth\, including endangered plants and animals. MassWildlife restores\, protects\, and manages land for wildlife to thrive and for people to enjoy.

SUMMARY:Springfield Museums\, Exhibits
DESCRIPTION:The Springfield Museums will reopen the historic George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum to the public on Saturday\, October 24\, following a nine-month preservation project. The reopening will introduce visitors to two compelling special exhibitions\, Visions of the Supernatural and Tara Sellios | Ask Now the Beasts\, that bring together historic objects and contemporary photography to explore mystery\, spirituality\, belief\, mortality\, and the unknown. \nThe reopening brings together the museum’s distinctive historic setting with two exhibitions that approach the mysteries of human experience from very different perspectives. Together\, they ask visitors to consider what we believe\, what we fear\, what we cannot explain\, and our enduring desire to find meaning in the unknown. \nWhat happens when we look beyond what we can see? Visions of the Supernatural explores humanity’s enduring fascination with spirits\, ghosts\, magic\, and the unexplained. Drawing from the Springfield Museums’ rich and diverse collections\, the exhibition examines the ways people have attempted to communicate with the spirit world\, understand mysterious phenomena\, and make sense of experiences that seem to defy explanation. \nVisitors will encounter objects and images associated with Spiritualism and other supernatural practices\, including spirit photography\, automatic writing\, Ouija boards\, Tarot\, crystal balls\, gemstones\, and other objects connected to the search for hidden knowledge and contact with the unseen. The exhibition considers both the historical context of these practices and the fascination they continue to inspire today. \nThe exhibition also invites visitors to participate. Guests can try their hand at automatic writing\, explore the symbolism and lore surrounding crystals\, and encounter other interactive experiences that bring the exhibition’s themes to life. Rather than asking visitors to accept the supernatural as either fact or fiction\, Visions of the Supernatural encourages them to consider why people are drawn to mystery—and what our beliefs reveal about our hopes\, fears\, and desire to understand what lies beyond the familiar. \nThe exhibition is especially at home in the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum\, where historic interiors and collections create an atmospheric setting for exploring these extraordinary stories. Objects associated with spiritual practices and images that blur the boundaries between documentation and illusion offer visitors a fresh perspective on familiar ideas about ghosts\, spirits\, and the mysterious. \nThe questions raised by Visions of the Supernatural find a contemporary counterpart in Tara Sellios | Ask Now the Beasts\, which presents the artist’s otherworldly vision through meticulously constructed\, large-scale photographs. \nDrawing on art history\, symbolism\, mysticism\, spiritualism\, and natural history\, Sellios creates elaborate contemporary allegories that explore suffering\, mortality\, transformation\, and transcendence. Her highly detailed compositions bring together animal skeletons\, swarming insects\, dried flowers\, fruit\, and other organic materials\, balancing the grotesque with the beautiful and inviting viewers to reflect on enduring questions about life\, death\, faith\, and the human condition. \nSellios’ work is deeply informed by her strict Christian upbringing and her fascination with the dramatic symbolism of religious iconography\, Dutch vanitas paintings\, and the fantastical visions of artists such as Hieronymus Bosch. Each photograph is the culmination of an intensive\, multidisciplinary process that combines drawing\, painting\, sculpture\, and large-format photography. \nIn Ask Now the Beasts\, Sellios transforms the visual language of the still life into a meditation on endings and beginnings. Her compositions suggest worlds in which devastation and hope\, darkness and light\, beauty and decay exist side by side. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nVisions of the Supernatural\n\nOctober 24\, 2026–February 7\, 2027\nG.W.V. SUMMARY:Richardson’s Candy Kitchen\, National Chocolate Day
DESCRIPTION:National Chocolate Day\, on October 28th\, celebrates all things chocolate at Richardson’s. \n \n\n\nHISTORY OF NATIONAL CHOCOLATE DAY\nThe history of chocolate goes back 2\,500 years. Aztecs loved their newly discovered liquid chocolate to the extent that they believed Quetzalcoatl\, the god of wisdom\, literally bestowed it upon them. Cacao seeds acted as a form of currency. And this was back in the “bitter” chocolate days — before they added sugar! Once chocolate turned sweet — in 16th-century Europe — the masses caught on and turned chocolate into a powerhouse treat. \nSeveral present-day chocolate companies began operations in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Cadbury started in England by 1868. Milton S. Hershey\, 25 years later\, purchased chocolate processing equipment at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago He started the company by producing chocolate-coated caramels. Nestlé\, dating back to the 1860s\, has grown into one of the largest food conglomerates in the world.

SUMMARY:Clark Art Institute\, a Flim
DESCRIPTION:Slapstick Film Series: Sherlock Jr. and Cops\n\n\nThis October and November\, the Clark hosts a series of silent slapstick comedy films that highlight quick wit\, precarious situations\, and hilarious mishaps. \nThe series continues with Sherlock Jr. (1924)\, in which an aspiring detective is framed for stealing his girlfriend’s father’s watch and must hunt down the true thief. Consistently listed among the 100 greatest films of all time\, Sherlock Jr. delights viewers with its whimsical spirit and profoundly modernist inventions. The innovations are both narrative and visual\, leading to a much-emulated dream sequence. (Run time: 45 minutes) \nThe showing is preceded by Buster Keaton’s short film\, Cops (1922). (Run time: 18 minutes) \nA talkback with Will Schmenner\, film scholar and head of public programs\, follows the screenings. \n\n\n\n\nFree. No registration required. \n
