Celebrating 130 years of Volleyball around the world, this year’s Morgan Classic marks an important milestone in our sport’s history.
In 1895, William G. Morgan created volleyball at the YMCA in Holyoke, MA, as a competitive — yet less intense — alternative to basketball. Originally called “Mintonette,” the game was renamed “Volley Ball” after professor Alfred T. Halstead highlighted its signature volleying action.
On July 7, 1896, during a conference at Springfield College, Holyoke’s mayor and fire chief each captained a team in the first public volleyball match, launching a sport that would soon captivate the world.
This milestone weekend honors the founding narrative of volleyball history: The Morgan Classic. Named for the sport’s founder, it continues both the tradition of showcasing talent in the sport at the site of its first public exhibition, and continues the principles of development in players clinics.
The Morgan Classic kicks off the International Volleyball Hall of Fame’s annual fundraising year—continuing our mission to honor and preserve the sport’s legacy every year since 1978.
Show your support for the Hall and your love of volleyball by attending the Morgan Classic Tournament, participating in the Clinics, or donating directly to the hall.
