UMass Music & Dance, Flute Day
November 9 @ 9:00 am - 6:00 pm
On Saturday, November 9, the University of Massachusetts Amherst Department of Music and Dance will host their fourth annual Western Massachusetts Flute Festival, coordinated by flute faculty member Cobus du Toit. The full-day event is open to flutists of all ages and skill levels, and will take place from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. in the Music Wing of the Fine Arts Center. The Flute Festival is free and open to the public; no advance registration is necessary, and participants are encouraged to bring their flute along for the day’s events.
The festival begins in earnest with a warm-up session hosted by du Toit, along with clinics and classes with guest flutist Nancy Stagnitta from the Interlochen Arts Academy. The day’s events will also include instrument demos with various vendors, a flute repair class, and readings of flute ensemble pieces with members of the UMass Flute Studio. The event will culminate with a 4 p.m. performance by Stagnitta in Bezanson, accompanied by UMass faculty Fumi Tomita (bass) and Tom Giampietro (drums) along with staff accompanist Ben Tibbetts and guest pianist Eugene Uman.
The previous evening, du Toit will also present a free faculty concert with pianist Nadine Shank at 7:30 pm in Bezanson Recital Hall.
Free and secure parking is available in nearby University lot 71 off Massachusetts Avenue and lot 62 via Thatcher Way or Stockbridge Road. Visit the Fine Arts Center website for more information or refer to the UMass interactive parking map.
