UMass Music & Dance, Annual New England Saxophone Festival
The University of Massachusetts Department of Music & Dance invites saxophone players, students, enthusiasts, and teachers to attend the 37th Annual New England Saxophone Festival and Competition, which will take place throughout the day on March 30th, 2019 in Bezanson Recital Hall and the Fine Arts Center Music Wing.
Organized by UMass Saxophone Studio professors Jonathan Hulting-Cohen and Felipe Salles, the Festival features concerts and interactive clinics by Salles (jazz), Hulting-Cohen (classical), and guest artists Claire Daly (jazz), and Connie Frigo (classical), plus the final round of the annual competitions for high school saxophone students. The winners will perform as the opening acts for the guest artist concert later in the day.
The free Faculty Concert featuring Felipe Salles and Jonathan Hulting Cohen takes place at 4:00 pm, while the free Guest Artist Concert featuring Claire Daly and Connie Frigo is at 7:00 pm. Frigo’s portion of the concert is classically-oriented, and will feature unusual transcriptions of works by Ravel, Debussy, Milhaud and Boulanger. Frigo will be joined by Angela Jones-Reus, flute and UMass faculty pianist Nadine Shank. In the jazz portion, Claire Daly will be accompanied by Chris Keefe, piano and UMass faculty members Fumi Tomita, bass and Tom Giampietro, drums.
The day will also feature a range of participatory events and instrument exhibitions that are sure to appeal to saxophone players of all levels and interests. College students will have the opportunity to register for master classes and perform in the College Showcase, and Professor Hulting-Cohen will lead the always-popular Sax Fest Ensemble, which gives sax players of all skill levels the chance to play with participants from all over New England.
The price to register for the Festival is $30 ($15 for UMass students), and includes all performances, programs and lunch. A special group rate of $95 is also available for music teachers with 4 or more non-UMass students, and includes free admission for the teacher and a guest.
