The New England Air Museum, Black History Month
February 1
Celebrate Black History Month by checking out our award-winning “Tuskegee Airmen: Their Untold Stories” exhibition, which is now officially part of the Connecticut Freedom Trail. Occupying a singular place in U.S. history, the Tuskegee Airmen were the first African American military aviators. Fighting in World War II as part of the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group, they contributed to the integration of the U.S. armed services. Over the course of the war, the Tuskegee Airmen flew 1,578 missions and 15,533 sorties, destroyed 261 enemy aircraft, and won more than 850 medals.
Told firsthand through the voices of the living Tuskegee Airmen, ranging in age from 96 to 100, as well as their families and friends, this exhibit is a testament to courage in the face of injustice. Facing systemic racism and discrimination during World War II, the Tuskegee Airmen defied the odds with unwavering excellence, determination, and skill—ultimately paving the way for the desegregation of the U.S. military.
“We fought two wars,” said Ret. Lt. Col. George Hardy, one of the last surviving Tuskegee Airmen. “One against fascism overseas, and one against racism at home. We came home to a country that still didn’t want us—but we never stopped fighting for what was right.”
Their exemplary performance and unbreakable spirit led to the eventual desegregation of the U.S. military and paved the way for generations of African Americans in aviation and beyond. Their story is one of perseverance, excellence, and triumph—and it must never be forgotten.
Visitors can also experience the museum’s award-winning documentary, which has received prestigious Webby and Telly Awards for its poignant storytelling. This film captures the Airmen’s firsthand accounts and brings their voices to life, ensuring their sacrifices and contributions continue to inspire future generations.
