THE MURAL:
Waves of Feminism was created the intention of informing our community about the history and future of the feminist movement through art. The mural depicts a young woman gazing out to the audience while her hair flows behind her in waves made up of protesting figures. These waves are portrayed as the four waves of feminism: the first focused on suffrage and the introduction the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), the second on the Roe v. Wade decision and push for a more inclusionary movement, the third focused on the #MeToo movement, and the fourth the present day to demand bodily autonomy and publication of the ERA. This imagery urges the viewer to reflect on the history of feminism and to imagine themselves in the future of the movement as well.
The design was inspired by a sketch that a local feminist created in the eighties, and was updated and adapted by Ada Paessel, Outreach Director of the Amherst Young Feminist Party. The process of creating the mural was spearheaded by members of Amherst Young Feminist Party and various community members. Amherst Young Feminist Party is especially grateful to the community for supporting the creation of Waves of Feminism.
