Old Sturbridge Village, Winter Warmth & Cheer

January 26 @ 9:30 am - 4:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 9:30am on Sunday and Saturday, repeating until February 10, 2019

Visitors will be treated to a guided story experience where the residents of 19th-century New England prepare for a winter celebration – a Grand Ball, filled with “Winter Warmth and Cheer!” Each trade shop, house, meetinghouse, and tavern on the Village Common will be brought to life by costumed interpreters as they talk about how 19th-century folks would have prepared for such a grand event.

A Sampling of What You’ll See:

  • Making candles for the family in the Small House
  • Making warm outerwear and fancy bonnets in the Parsonage
  • Picking out proper ball attire and hairstyles in the Salem Towne House
  • Cooking for company in the Fitch House
  • Printing invitations on the printing press in the Print Shop
  • Making tin lighting devices
  • and more!

Be sure to also stop by the Bullard Tavern to warm up with hot and hearty soup or stew and dessert! Specialty cocktails will also be available. Some of the shops and buildings that are not a part of the Common (Blacksmith Shop, Freeman Farm, etc.) will be closed during this experience.

January 12-13, 19-20, 26-27 and February 2-3, and 9-10

Dinner in a Country Village

Enjoy a unique opportunity to prepare and eat a meal as early New Englanders did. Participants gather in the Parsonage, where costumed interpreters oversee the preparations, but the guests do the roasting, baking, and mulling. Then, sit down and enjoy the delicious results by candlelight!
