Old Sturbridge Village, Concert and Kiln

September 28 @ 5:30 pm - 9:30 pm EDT

Enjoy a special evening in the Village after our normal hours of operation, featuring our annual kiln firing, a bonfire on the Common, and music by the Old Sturbridge Village Singers and Scottish fiddle/cello duo Ben and Elizabeth Anderson.

About the Old Sturbridge Village Singers

The Old Sturbridge Village Singers are celebrating more than 20 years of performing in the recreated setting of an early New England village. The group’s goal is to bring to life the songs of everyday people who lived in the extraordinary pre-industrial days of American history. The Singers perform a variety of songs popular in early 19th-century New England, including hymns, folk songs, patriotic tunes, and more. Their performance will take place in the Center Meetinghouse.

About the Kiln

We’re firing our 24-foot brick kiln this weekend! The kiln at Old Sturbridge Village, a replica of Hervey Brooks’s kiln, is made with 15,000 bricks. It stands 24 feet tall and must be heated to 1,900 degrees Fahrenheit during firing, which requires three cords of wood stoked over 24 hours. The exact length of the firing depends on a number of variables, including the dryness or wetness of the brick before firing. The historic and still perhaps most reliable way to know when the kiln and the pottery inside are at the right heat is, with a very heavily gloved hand, to slide a brick out of the door opening and look inside. Just as in blacksmithing, the pottery will glow. An experienced potter will recognize that certain shade of orange. The glaze on the pottery will also look wet because at that heat it is literally a molten glass.

The pieces that emerge from the firing are truly one-of-a-kind!
