Hermit Castle and Valley View Hike
|Click here to register for Fall Hikes at Northfield Mountain|
Due to the popularity of this program we are offering it again in November. We have packed it all into this 4.5 mile loop hike – views of the Millers River Valley, stories of Hermit Castle, beautiful rock formations and a forest of late fall color. We’ll begin on the back side of Northfield Mountain hiking a section of the New England Scenic Trail. The hike will end at 3:00 p.m. Hikers must be 18 years or older and be comfortable hiking over somewhat hilly terrain with total elevation gain of 700 feet. Pre-registration is required as group size is strictly limited for this free program. Masks are required for group gathering.
The late autumn shades of oak leaves provide welcome color to a changing landscape. Long after maple trees are bare, oaks still celebrate the glory of fall. More subdued than the fiery blaze of October’s foliage, oak leaves come in a range of colors. From deep red to purple, from gold to brown, these warm earth tones contrast with the green pines, stone walls and gray boulders dotting the landscape. As an added bonus, beeches and oaks often keep their leaves during the cold months, offering our winter landscape a touch of bronze and brown.
