Holyoke Heritage State Park, June Events

June 5 @ 9:00 am - 12:30 pm

Something to do each day at the park. All Programs are free and open to the public! Holyoke Heritage State Park grounds are also home to the Children’s Museum at Holyoke, the Holyoke Merry-Go-Round, and the Volley-ball Hall of Fame (fees apply).

Fridays

9:00 – 10:00 a.m.

Birding in the Park

Suitable for individuals and families with children, ages 8 and older (siblings welcome)

Geared for beginners, but seasoned birders are welcome. This program will feature a slow walk through the park grounds looking for and learning to identify the birds that live here.  Meet inside the Visitor Center.  Please bring binoculars if you have them.  In case of rain, please call to confirm.

Thursdays, June 7 & 28

11:30 – 1:00 p.m.

Bricks, Masonry, and MUD!!

For families with children ages 6 and older (siblings welcome). Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Discover the many ways bricks were laid that house the mills, churches, and schools. Observe the various masonry techniques of the buildings across from the park and take part in a hands-on activity making your own mud brick and trying your hand at applying mortar.  Meet at the Visitor Center.

History and Nature for Preschoolers

Suitable for families with pre-school-aged children (siblings welcome)

Come enjoy some indoor/outdoor activities on the history of Holyoke and nature exploration with your preschoolers.  Historical topics include what Holyoke’s great mills produced and how people lived during its great industrial period.  Nature topics will focus on plants and animals of the park and how to “really see” them.  Many activities will include crafts and the use of puppets.  Meet inside the Visitor Center.

Tuesday Mill Tours

Suitable for individuals and families with children, ages 8 and older (siblings welcome)

Bring your cameras, smart phones, and/or binoculars for an easy 1.8 mile walking tour focused on textile and paper mill design.  Discover and photograph the many decorative features which grace some of Holyoke’s oldest mills.   In case of rain, please call to confirm.

Making Paper in “The Paper City!” 

For children ages 7 and older (siblings welcome).  Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Learn about how paper is made and then make some ourselves!  Decorate our paper with dried wildflowers found in the park.  Meet in the Visitor Center lobby.

Weaving for Kids: How Cloth is Made

Suitable for families with children, ages 7 and older (siblings welcome)

Holyoke was originally a city designed exclusively as a textile manufacturing center.  Learn about the history and the basics of how cloth is woven.  Weave your own colorful cloth using a simple loom and strips of fabric.  Meet inside the Visitor Center.

Saturday Canal Tours

Suitable for individuals and families with children, ages 8 and older (siblings welcome)

Discover Holyoke’s upper and second level canals on this easy, 0.75 mile walk.  Uncover their history, how they were built, how they were harnessed to power textile and paper mills, and how they are still in use today. Meet inside the Visitor Center.  In case of rain, please call to confirm.

The Holyoke Heritage State Park Visitor Center features an information desk, displays, and an exhibition hall.  The exhibition hall focuses on both Holyoke’s history as a center for paper and textile manufacturing and its role as a gateway for the immigrant and migrant groups who settled this culturally rich and vibrant city.

Holyoke Heritage State Park is an accessible urban park and green-way, situated on the former site of the city’s railroad yard and the Skinner silk mill. Located in the center of Holyoke’s historic mill district, the park features open space, picnicking, a small playground, and a walkway along the upper, water-power canal. Entrance to the park is FREE. Parking in the lot adjacent to the Holyoke Merry-Go-Round is also FREE. Metered parking is available on the streets surrounding the park.
