Holyoke Heritage State Park, Canal Tour

May 27, 2023 @ 9:30 am - 1:00 pm EDT

For adults and teens. Two tours in one! Holyoke’s canals were the key to this planned industrial city.  Paper and textile mills set up shop as soon as sections were completed to reap the waterpower the canals provided. Learn how the waterways were constructed, how they work, and tour parts of first and second level canals. End up at the Robert E. Barrett Fishway. There you will receive a guided tour of HG&E’s powerhouse and the fishway where you can see the fishlift in operation and observe fish that have been transported over the dam.

Limit 15 people. Registration Required. Call (413-534-1723) or e-mail ([email protected]) to register.

Program is free. Meet at the Holyoke Heritage State Park Visitor Center. Dress for the weather. Severe weather cancels.

Holyoke Heritage State Park Visitor Center also hosts permanent exhibits depicting waterpower, mill industries, Mountain Park, and immigrant lives. Public programs and tours are also offered throughout the year. A complete listing of children and adult programs and further park information is available at the park’s website.

Admission is free. Visitor Center is open year-round, Tuesday through Sunday, from noon until 4:00. The park and visitor center are wheelchair accessible.

The Robert E. Barrett Fishway at the Holyoke Dam opens for the season on May 10th. Come see our amazing fish elevator and the underwater fish viewing windows.

Open May 10 through June 18

Wednesday – Sunday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
