Connecticut Science Center, The Science Of Mindfulness

The brain may be the most complex system in the known universe, and staggeringly, this three-pound organ appears to give rise to you — your thoughts, feelings, fears, and hopes. The brain is a system that is shaped by social interaction, the environment, and even its own thoughts. Many studies demonstrate that the practice of mindfulness may cause significant changes in the structure and function of the brain in areas involved in attention, bodily awareness, and compassion.

In this presentation, we will explore this profound concept in numerous ways, including how the brain and mind can be cultivated towards an enhanced sense of calm and connection. The session will be highly experiential with opportunities for practicing different mindfulness techniques as well as engagement in reflection and conversation.

Learning Objectives:
1. To understand the concepts of attention, mind-wandering, and mindfulness.
2. To understand the science of mindfulness and the neurobiological implications of various mindfulness practices.
3. To directly experience mindfulness practices associated with attention, bodily awareness, and compassion.
4. To acquire tips and resources for continued practice and engaging mindfully in daily activities.
