Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican tradition that dates back to pre-Hispanic times. Ancient Aztecs honored the dead with rituals during the harvest season and viewed death as the seasons, a cycle of life, death, and rebirth. One of the traditions of Día de los Muertos is an Ofrenda, or altar. Entire families build their Ofrenda with a mix of ancient cultural practices and religious images and objects. Ofrenda’s can be simple or highly elaborate and can be found in homes, cemeteries, churches, museums, and many towns’ main plazas. Come see the very first Ofrenda to be installed at the Connecticut Science Center, created by local artisan Carlos Hernandez Chavez. You can even bring your own items to add to the Ofrenda. The Connecticut Science Center is not responsible for lost or damaged property. Any items added to the Ofrenda will not be returned.
