Adventure East, Hike

January 11 @ 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm EST

Using our skills in observation, we can identify animals by their tracks most easily in winter when there is snow cover.

However, there are other ways to see animals as well. Middens, debris left behind from eating, fur and feathers, seed pods, bark and twigs, droppings and urine markings, and other tell tale signs are sure to be found. A keen observer sees more than just tracks in the snow.

To gain more insight into the animal, we may follow these signs to determine their route(s) of travel, their migration, or venture near their dwellings. We will explore insects, birds, and mammals by what they leave behind. This tracking series will bring participants closer to the wild animals that inhabit the pioneer valley and beyond.

Today’s session we will be exploring waterways as navigation, stream edge tracks, passing through, our paths and theirs. This session will focus on tracks near the water’s edge, identifying direction of travel.
