Adventure East, Hawk Watch

October 9 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm EDT

As the days shorten, the natural world begins to prepare for the upcoming seasons – notably, our feathered friends. Join us for hawk watching along the majestic deck of Mount Holyoke’s Summit House at the top of Skinner State Park road. Hawk migration begins in mid-September and the Summit House is an ideal spot to witness this amazing, seasonal phenomenon. Overlooking the Connecticut River Valley and surrounded by striking, scenic vistas, the historic Summit House provides a perfect backdrop for birdwatching with out knowledgeable guide.

Standing roughly 1,000 feet above the floodplain, we will observe various hawk species as they rise through the morning’s thermals created by the sun’s cumulative heat. We hope to see three types of hawks: buteos (eg: Red-Tailed Hawk), accipiters (eg: Cooper’s Hawks), and at least one of the falcons (eg: American Kestrel). We may even see a few bald eagles!

Ample parking is available.
