The starting point of this ride is at 2281′ of elevation in front of the 222-year-old Cooper Hill Inn in East Dover, VT. Weather permitting, you will have 100-mile views from this location near the base of the Mount Snow ski area. The first mile is steeply downhill on nice pavement, but you will soon be on a more gradual descent on classic Vermont gravel roads through sheep and cattle farmland. After about ten miles, you will leave the agricultural area behind and descend into the Green River Valley. The headwaters of the Green River will be on your right and are only about 5′ wide. As you descend into the valley, more and more waterfalls off the high valley walls increase the flow of the river. You will cross two wooden covered bridges during this ride. The Green River valley is like a little piece of Glacier National Park transplanted into Vermont and western Massachusetts. With the net 2031′ elevation drop on the 31-mile ride, this is one not to be missed.

This ride is best on a gravel or adventure bike, but a mountain or fat bike with a strong rider can work just as well. Bring all the food and water you’ll need. In case of a major mechanical complication, or if you run out of energy, etc., the van will shadow the ride on the nearest roads.
