The Pioneer River Valley has some of the best soil in the country as well as some of the oldest farms. Agricultural products in the valley range from goat cheese, Asian pears, a diverse mix of vegetables, organic strawberries, mushrooms, wine, cheese, and grass-fed beef. On this tasting tour of some of our favorite farms in the area, we will have a chance to ask questions of the farmers and understand what is involved with managing a small, profitable farm in the Pioneer Valley.
Everyone needs to eat, so whether you are interested in farming or not there is something on this tour for all to enjoy and savor!
- Thomas Farm in Sunderland, MA: Over 100 goats call this beautiful farm home, and they are milked twice daily to produce an award-winning Chevre cheese.
- Carrs’ Cider in Hadley, MA: Traditional wild fermented hard ciders, cider syrup, apple cider vinegar, and switchel grown in a bucolic setting close to Amherst. Here we can sample some of their refreshing shrub and take in the views overlooking the Connecticut River Valley.
- Smiarowski Farmstand and Creamery: Our tasting tour will end at this local favorite for fresh produce where we can try some of their delicious ice cream.
